Each motor can be identified by means of an individual marking. The engine number is composed of
- Raised numerals in the casting of the engine block
- Numbers stamped into a smooth ground surface
These two numbers indicate the type and variant of the engine.
- To the right of these, the consecutive production number of the engine is also stamped on a smoothly ground surface.
The engine number is required when procuring spare parts so that the components matching the engine can be obtained.
In addition, the engine number can be used to determine whether the engine delivered from the factory or another engine is still installed.
Volvo's historical archive contains documents that can be used to check the history of the vehicle. For example, it is possible to determine whether the body, engine, transmission and body color numbers "match" the chassis number. Fraudulently welded-in or attached numbers that originate from a scrap vehicle and forged vehicle documents can be unmasked in this way.
