VOLVO P1800 models are equipped with B 18 or B 20 engines. Both are robust, stable and durable engines, which are installed in the various series of AB VOLVO between 1961 and 1975, - PV, 120/130, P1800, 140 and 240, but they are also used in vehicles for agriculture and military.
VOLVO PENTA uses the engine blocks and cylinder heads for the marine engines of the AQ130 series, which have a particularly good reputation, they are considered to be robust and stable. Due to the enlarged cooling channels, the thermal load is lower than in a car engine.
The main features:
- Four-cylinder in-line engine
- Overhead valves, operated by valve lifters and rocker arms
- Water cooling
- Bottom-mounted camshaft, driven by spur gears
- Crankshaft mounted on five bearings
- Main oil filter
The cylinder block is cast in one piece from special cast iron, the cylinder bores are made directly in the block. The engine blocks and cylinder heads are painted in typical VOLVO red, which is why they are called "red blocks". They are equipped with various carburetors, alternators and fuel pumps.
The B 18 engine with a displacement of 1,780 cc was replaced by the B 20 engine with a displacement of 1,986 cc in 1968 for the 1969 model year. Externally, the engine blocks hardly differ. However, the connecting rod bearings are reinforced, the bores for the cylinders are widened and the crankshaft main bearing and the connecting rod foot bearing are made of lead bronze.
In the VOLVO P1800, the B 18 B and B 20 B engines are installed, each with two flat-flow carburetors, and the B 20 E and B 20 F with the BOSCH D-Jetronic electronic fuel injection system.
In this chapter, the engines are presented in more detail and the key figures are listed.
